“The demand is liberation; the emphasis is connectedness; the corrective is suffering; the power is imagination; and the vocation is tikkun olam — the repair of the world.”

  1. I’ve been wrestling with this idea of the Purpose of the Church for a while. It is MY OPINION that we have gotten it wrong in thinking the purpose of the Church is to reach the lost. I think evangelism is a mandate for the Church, not the purpose for it.
It may seem semantical, but I think it makes a profound difference. I think we need to focus more on becoming what Ephesians 4:1-5:21 talks about, the fully developed and mature Bride of Christ with the ultimate purpose of Glorifying God.
I believe one of the problems is that glorifying God has become more of a pop-culture slogan than a living worldview. The Church should be a Living Image of Christ (developed in the mature characteristics of Eph 4-5). If our starting premise shifts, then our strategy will shift, but our end result will be the same (evangelism in love), and yet, more effective in Glorifying God.
    What do you think?
