the devil’s tryin’ to steal-a-my – joy, joy, joy
but God has not forgotten my – cry, cry, cry
so let’s all sing Hallelujah
let’s all sing Hallelujah
let’s all sing Hallelujah
God has not forgotten my cry
my heart keeps threat’ning to –
break, break, break
my hope keeps slippin’ a –
way, way, way
so let’s all sing Hallelujah
let’s all sing Hallelujah
let’s all sing Hallelujah
God has not forgotten my cry
i’m swimmin’ in a sea of my – tears, tears, tears
but God keeps drownin’ my – fears, fears, fears
so let’s all sing Hallelujah
let’s all sing Hallelujah
let’s all sing Hallelujah
God has not forgotten my cry
let’s lift glory to Heaven
let’s lift glory to Heaven
let’s lift glory to Heaven
God has not forgotten my cry
so let’s live like we believe it
let’s live like we believe it
let’s live like we believe it
God has not forgotten our cry
God has not forgotten our cry
God has not forgotten our cry

one of my favorite styles of gospel music are the old spirituals. I love the passion. I’m inspired by the courageous honesty. these are songs of great hope grown in the soil of deep pain, which is why so many are still around today.
I don’t claim to have lived nearly deeply enough to write a song worthy of being called “a spiritual,” but this was my attempt to capture some of the grit and celebration of this amazing tradition. it's a ridiculous tune in many ways, but I love how it invites people to sing different parts and carry the song as one big choir. and by the time we hit the “so let’s all sing hallelujah!” chorus, we have ourselves some old time church.
